These affirmative action bake sales, where cookies and cupcakes are sold at different prices according to the race/ethnicity of the buyer, are quite childish. Pew Research recently reported that the median wealth of whites is about 20 times that of African Americans and about 18 times that of Hispanics. The median wealth of whites was $113,000 in 2009 compared to $6,000 among Hispanics. From 2004 to 2009, median wealth has declined among Hispanics by 66%, while the median wealth of whites has declined by 18%. Lalo Alcaraz adds his take to the bake sale. Given that the University of California has had record low enrollment among minorities, I’m curious to know exactly what advantages minorities are getting that these white students want so badly to tap into.
