Bait and Hook: Leapster 2

We have a few of these Leapster 2’s and other Leapfrog toys for the kids and we are not unhappy with their products, until today.  A stylus pen for one of the Leapster 2s broke so I went to to buy a few replacements.  As you can see, the Leapster 2 unit is about $45.  We got ours at a similar price on sale at Target.  I figured I could buy a pack of stylus pens for ten bucks, perhaps similar to the Nintendo DS replacement stylus pack.  Well, one pen for the Leapster is $21. Hmmm.

This bums me out.  I expect to pay a higher price for the games themselves.  After all, thats the business model. I think you reluctantly accept that as part of the deal when you purchase something like this, or a PS3, new razor, etc.    But the games are less than $20.

This makes me not want to buy another Leapfrog product.

As a sidenote, this is why I don’t buy Gillette products.  The initial purchase of the razor is cheap, $5 here, but the replacement razors are very expensive, $21 for a pack of six.  Instead, I use a Mercur safety razor, which costs from $30-$50 and is of good quality, but a pack of 10 replacement razors can be purchased  for about $5.  This is a much better deal for me.  I feel like I am getting a solid product and I’m not getting hooked to buy expensive accessories. With the Gillette, I feel like I’m getting a cheap product upfront that is also inexpensive, but will have to pay more just to use.  Not to mention to constant marketing changes they make to the same functional product.  It feels much  ickier and used car salesmeny to do business with Gillette and now with Leapfrog.  Buh bye Leapfrog.
