Not at all, says Stephen Nuño, who teaches politics at Northern Arizona University. “First, appealing to Latinos has a spillover effect in appealing to moderate and independent voters,” says Nuño.  ”Second, even small percentages can give you an edge – President Obama won Indiana by one percentage point in 2008.”  And third, Nuño says a culture of openness in an early campaign can help candidates when they try to appeal to Latinos in larger states.
